Volunteering safely

Volunteer waiver

The organizing team and volunteers act in good faith to make the volunteer dinner event safe and welcoming, with care for the well-being of everyone who attends or helps out.

I understand that volunteering at the volunteer dinner event may involve risks, including cuts, burns, slips, falls, and other injuries, particularly when working in or around the kitchen.

I voluntarily accept these inherent risks and agree to follow all safety instructions, practice proper hygiene, use equipment responsibly, and promptly report any unsafe conditions or injuries.

Kitchen and service rules

You must strictly follow these rules when in the kitchen and when serving food. They are both for your safety and to ensure proper food safety.

A hair net is required

You must wear a hair net at all times when in the kitchen or when serving food. If you have an unruly beard or too much facial hair you will need to wear a beard net. Anyone with long hair or a pony tail must have it tied up. We’ll have hair nets available for you at the venue.

Proper attire must be worn

Proper kitchen attire must be worn when in the kitchen. Closed-toe shoes without heels, long pants and long sleeves are required to protect you from burns.

Clean hands and gloves

Hands must be thoroughly washed for working in the kitchen. They should also be periodically rewashed. If you are handling food, you must wear food-safe nitrile gloves. Do not touch or scratch your face, hair, or other parts of your body without rewashing your hands and changing your gloves. If you cough or sneeze, do so into your elbow and then rewash your hands and change your gloves.

Take breaks

If you are tired or need a break, please ask, and then take one. Please do not disappear without informing someone first that you’re leaving your station so that it can be covered and so that food does not burn, get forgotten in an oven or left out.

At your own risk

If you are not comfortable working in the kitchen environment, please say so and we will try and find other duties for you outside of the hall. You are working here at your own risk. Be aware of sources of heat and steam and heavy items and slippery floors. If you are not sure how something works or how to operate something safely, please ask.
